Synopsis

This grim, claustral story takes place in the isolated mountains of western Virginia. The sineater is a man shunned by all, a man whose face should never be seen. He performs the valuable service of absorbing all the sins of each person who dies, by eating ritual food laid out on their corpses. Yet things have begun to change; the sineater appears to have become infected by all the sins he has consumed over the years. A series of violent omens convinces the fanatic locals that God is punishing them and that Judgment Day is nigh. Joel, the sineater's son, is caught up in the maelstrom and must face his greatest fears...and his father, whom he has never seen face to face.

Sineater won the Bram Stoker Award.
